Seeing the Signs

Much of what I have been doing in the last year has revolved around getting clear. Getting clear on what I wanted and getting clear on where I was going - I SO needed to know what was right for me and where I should be spending my energy and I felt quite paralysed with that lack of knowing. Those of you who know me well know that I am rarely short of energy! And yet, at the end of 2002 I found myself really tired. I mean shattered, most of the time. I looked back over the previous year and saw all sorts of energy drains but the main one was really needing to know what I was "supposed" to be doing.

The more I looked at it, the more I could see that I was spending so much energy on needing to know - searching so hard for the "right" path - that I was draining my own energy reserves. I was being less effective than usual and life felt like hard work. Now one thing I know to be true is that when you are on the "right" path, life feels effortless. However hard you are working the passion and inspiration fuel you and synchronicity kicks in to help you. I was sadly lacking in synchronicity :o)

So, over Christmas 2002 I made a decision. As I have no idea what I want to be doing, I will do nothing. I will recharge my batteries, eat well, laugh masses and spend every minute of the school holidays with my gorgeous family! An amazing (though not surprising) series of events then happened.

Firstly I realised I didn't actually want to know exactly where I was going - I love surprises! Then when I let go of wanting to know where I was going, I realised that there were several things that I definitely no longer wanted to do - and that those things were taking up a lot of energy. So, with no idea of where I was going, I set about looking at what I was going to drop from my life the following year and how I wanted to feel at the end of 2003. With these decisions made I set about enjoying the rest of the three week break I had given myself.

That's when the real magic started. In this restful state when I didn't need to know where I was going, the signs started flowing freely. Opportunities arose that I couldn't possibly have planned for and people called me with exciting unexpected offers!! So, how do you get to see the signs? How do we block those signs and what can we do to free up the flow of signs and synchronicity?

  1. Let go. Let go of needing be so sure about where you are going. It is great to have a route map, but when you don't have one, make that okay. Let go of the notion that there is one right thing that you need to do right now. Maybe there is but you won’t see it if you're pushing too hard.
  2. Take great care of yourself. When you are tired and overwhelmed you are much less likely to be able to connect to your intuition and creativity. Look at your time boundaries: do you give away too much of your time? Do you agree to do things for others that leave you short of time to do things for yourself? What habit does your body most want you to change? Make a plan and change one thing at a time - too many positive changes are just as likely to overwhelm you.
What do you need to drop in order to make the space for great new ideas and opportunities? When we are running around at a rate of knots we don't spot the opportunities and signs in front of our noses. Make a list of the things that you do that drain your energy - in other words, the things that take more from your life than they add to it.
  3. Lose the blinkers. When we are too convinced about what we need in life, we can miss the joy that is around us. Sometimes we are being sent awesome gifts that we fail to recognise because we are looking too hard for something else. A client told me last week that "this wasn't working" for him. he told me he was working so hard to feel secure and all that was happening was his wife was nagging him to spend more time at home so that they could spend time together and make the most of the beautiful home he was working so hard to pay for. He hadn't stopped to see that the security that he so badly wanted was at home waiting for him to stop work :o) The results of our good works come back to us in unexpected ways - be alert to them.
  4. Watch for the opportunities that fall into your lap. What are the projects that just seem to flow? Where do most of your clients come from? I resisted prosperity coaching for so long. When I took that three weeks off I suddenly realised that every time a journalist rings me out of the blue for help with an article, it was always on the subject of money. The seminars I arranged around prosperity filled without being advertised.
  5. Rather than ask yourself "what do I do next", ask yourself "what seems to want to happen through me"? Look for the ease in life and you will see what the universe wants you to do! If you are struggling, you may well need to change directions rather than struggle harder ;-)
  6. Be prepared to have it be easy! We are so attached to hard work! I hear so many clients saying that something is more worthwhile if it has been hard fought for. We are brought up with a work ethic that seems to implant firmly the belief that hard work is a virtue. Our beliefs always create our reality. If you believe it has to be hard work, then it will be! Watch out for those beliefs and work with them. Grab yourself a coach if necessary to help you work through those beleifs. Ask yourself: "If I believed it was more virtuous to have it easy, what would I do differently?" Try it!

Remember - the signs are already there - you just need to open up and "see" them!
